A 41-year-old janitor has been arrested and charged after he and his entire family were caught living in a children’s museum where he worked.
According to reports, Wilbert Calhoun and his wife were living in the museum with their five young children. Police also found a huge stash of weapons in a storage room near an art supplies closet.
Carson City Sheriff’s Office said that Calhoun was a janitor in the museum while his wife was working as the manager.
According to deputies, they also found marijuana paraphernalia, handguns, and an AK-47.
The family’s situation was exposed after police received a report informing them that a two-year-old was wandering unsupervised near the museum. Officers then questioned the toddler who told them that they had been living at the museum.
After searching the building, officers found evident signs of people living in unused rooms, finding clothes, sleeping bags and mattresses.
After Calhoun’s arrest, police were informed that guns, marijuana, and other weapons had also been discovered in the building.
They also found weapons and weapon pieces including three gun suppressors and a taser.
A sheriff’s office report also said that the room “could easily be accessed by a wandering child.”
Calhoun was charged with child neglect/endangerment, three counts of possessing a suppressor, and two counts of possessing a short barrel rifle.
The museum’s Board of Directors has apologized and are “working hard to make sure that nothing like this will ever happen again” as the incident has ruined the museum’s reputation for many parents.
Speaking to News 4, Leah Tsuchimoto said that she used to recommend visitors to see the Children’s Museum.
“There was a lot of other things that made me feel a little insecure about the place, like especially bringing the one-year-old there,” she said.
“Because I felt like there was a couple of more choking hazards that they didn’t pay attention to,” Leah added.
