A man decided to take his own life after he accidentally shot his own brother.
According to reports, the unnamed man from Oregon was loading up his gun on Tuesday morning when a bear went to their yard.
While he was defending himself against the black bear, he ‘accidentally shot his brother,’ said the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office.
Police found the brother with gunshot wounds at a home in the 2000 block of Placer Road in Sunny Valley.
The police report stated: “The caller reported that he had accidentally shot his brother while loading a gun because there was a bear on their property.”
After checking the property, deputies “located a deceased male from an apparent gunshot wound. While checking the rest of the residence, a second deceased male was located with what appeared to a be self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
“It is believed the caller took his own life after calling 911 to report the accidental shooting,” the police report added.
The investigation continues and has been forwarded to the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office.
Speaking to Daily Mail, the Sheriff’s Office said that there is ‘no further information available’ at this time.
The Josephine County Parks Department, which calls the state ‘Black Bear Country,’ reminds people that it is ‘never safe to approach a bear.’
“If you encounter a bear, stay calm. Do not run or make any sudden movements. Back away slowly as you face the bear. Avoid direct eye contact with the bear.”
The department also warns that if a bear were to attack, ‘fight back’ by ‘shouting, being aggressive, using rocks, sticks, and hands’ to scare the animal away.
It is not clear if the bear on the property was aggressive toward the brothers or what happened to it after police arrived.
