A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and cannibalism after the remains of an elderly man were found in his microwave.
39-year-old James David Russell from Bonner County, Idaho, was charged with first-degree murder and cannibalism after allegedly killing 70-year-old David Flaget and eating his body parts in an attempt to “cure his brain.”
As the authorities believe, Russell bound his victims’ hands and mutilated his body after taking his life. The investigators also discovered Flaget’s body parts in the man’s microwave and the rest of his residence along with a knife and a duffel bag.
“When dealing with death and carnage it’s a shock to our conscience. As far as I know this is the first cannibalism charge in Idaho,” Detective Phillip Stella said in an interview with Shoshone News Press.
The Bonner County detective went on to claim that “Flaget had several conflict-like run-ins with Russell” prior to his unfortunate passing.
“The family had enough warning signs that Mr. Russell was a danger to himself or others,” he added.
Though the autopsy was already completed, some of Flaget’s body parts are still missing and may never be found.
“There’s a lot of facets we will certainly never know. It wasn’t the bloodiest crime scene, but it’s more of the psychological, ‘what the heck is going on here?’ and ‘why am I picking up pieces?’” Stella said.
“It’s a walk down the dark path that we don’t see very often.”
As of this writing, Russell remains in police custody.
