Lisa Marie Presley’s cause of death has been revealed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
According to reports, the only daughter of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley died of sequela of small bowel obstruction.
A sequela is a condition caused by a previous disease or injury but in Lisa Marie’s case, “the obstruction was in the form of a strangulated small bowel caused by adhesions that developed after bariatric surgery years ago. This is a known long term complication of this type of surgery.”
The 54-year-old singer-songwriter died on January 12 after being rushed to a hospital for a possible cardiac arrest.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said to PEOPLE at that time that emergency services rushed to 5900 block of Normandy Drive in Calabasas, California.
Paramedics performed CPR upon arrival before taking her to a local hospital where she passed away.
Weeks after her death, her mother Priscilla, 77, tried to take control of her trust, which friends said she wanted to be taken over by her daughter, Riley Keough.
Priscilla’s legal team filed a petition in Los Angeles questioning the ‘authenticity and validity’ of a 2016 amendment to the trust, which removed the grandmother as a co-trustee and put the granddaughter in charge.
Days after filing the petition, she released a statement to celebrate Lisa Marie’s birthday.
“Today would have been Lisa’s 55th birthday. My wish is to protect my three grandchildren and keep our family together,” Priscilla wrote.
The statement continued: “From the first moment I held Lisa in my arms, I’ve protected, loved and guided her, as I have my son. Our hearts are broken, and I am having to learn to live without my only daughter.”
People close to Lisa Marie have insisted that the late singer wanted her trust to be controlled by her children.
In June, a settlement was reached and Keough has become the sole trustee of her mother’s estate. She also agreed to pay her grandmother $1 million and $400,000 in legal fees.
