The moment a giant lightning struck a statue of Jesus Christ in Brazil was caught on camera.
Leaving social media users stunned, photographer Fernando Braga shared photos of the exact moment a massive bolt struck the top of Rio De Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue.
The massive, 125-foot statue remains one of the country’s most-visited tourist spots and attracts as many as two million visitors from around the world every year.
Less known, however, is the fact that the statue was hit by lightning three times in the last fifteen years.
One of these moments was caught on camera on February 10 by Fernando Braga who shared photos and footage of the astounding moment on Instagram.
The images quickly went viral and racked up over twenty million views so far.
“This is one of the most beautiful and terrifying photos I’ve ever seen in my life,” one person said.
“At this point it must be Zeus or Thor,” another viewer joked.
“Jokes apart, this is a quite recurrent event, being the highest point, it’s just the luck of having someone doing photography at the right time,” a third pointed out.
One user added: “Thank you for sharing these pics with us – they’re absolutely gorgeous and special.”
According to the reports, the statue was not damaged by lightning.
Unfortunately, this was not the case when the effigy got bolted back in January 2014.
At the time, the lightning damaged the statue’s thumb which then had to be repaired. That moment, too, was caught on camera.
