Kool & The Gang co-founder and drummer George Brown has passed away at the age of 74.
The legendary musician is best known for being one of the founding members of the beloved 70s R&B/Soul band.
Throughout his career in the music industry, Brown helped give life to a series of top-performing radio hits such as Jungle Boogie, Get Down On It, Celebration, and many more.
His band also won a number of awards including a Music Business Association Chairman’s Award, seven American Music Awards, and two Grammy Awards.
His passing was confirmed by TMZ, with the publication listing lung cancer as his cause of death. The musician reportedly died at his Los Angeles home on Thursday night after battling stage four lung cancer.
It was previously revealed the cancer came back stronger than before after Brown went into remission.
“George Brown died November 16, 2023 in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer,” a representative told TMZ.
Speaking of the singer and drummer’s illness, Dr. Robert A. Nagourney said he met Brown after the latter started feeling ill.
“George was diagnosed in September of 2021 with very rare form of non-small cell lung cancer, with an EGFR exon 20 insertion mutation,” he explained.
“Although he responded to initial therapy, within the year the tumor came roaring back with metastasis to lymph nodes, lung, pleura and liver.
“His physicians in Los Angeles treated him with every drug they could imagine, from the newest classes of targeted drugs to conventional chemotherapies, to immune and anti-vascular therapies all to no avail. George was in trouble.”
