Former police officer Kim Potter has been sentenced to two years in prison after accidentally shooting dead Daunte Wright.
The 48-year-old Minneapolis cop was facing a first-degree manslaughter charge after mistaking her gun for a taser and fatally shooting 20-year-old Daunte Wright during an arrest gone wrong back in April 2021.
Following her conviction in December, Potter now appeared in the Minneapolis courthouse in front of Judge Regina Chu who sentenced her to two years in prison which is far below the maximum of seven years.
The judge reportedly cried as she read out the sentence and acknowledged that Potter was remorseful of her actions.
Thanks to two months time served and an 8-month concession due to good behavior, the disgraced cop will only serve 14 months in jail.
After the sentence was read out, a brawl between Potter’s and Daunte’s supporters erupted outside the courthouse.
Meanwhile, Daunte’s brother, Damik, clashed with one of Potter’s supporters inside the courthouse and taunted the man to take the issue outside.
During the heated altercation, Daunte’s sister, Diamond, was placed in handcuffs. While some reports suggested that she got in a fight with the mother of Wright’s children, others claimed she was trying to protect the woman from another person.
After the dramatic sentencing, Daunte’s mom, Katie Wright, broke into tears and slammed the judge for the lenient sentence.
“We’re very disappointed in the outcome. This isn’t OK. This is the problem with our justice system. White woman tears trump justice. I thought my white woman tears would be good enough,” she expressed.
