Kelly Clarkson broke into tears as she claimed her daughter’s peers have been bullying the child because of her condition.
The 40-year-old singer and songwriter on Tuesday spoke to Henry Winkler on The Kelly Clarkson Show and revealed that her 8-year-old daughter River Rose, who is battling dyslexia, has become a target of bullies at her school.
Dyslexia, often known as a reading disability, is a learning disorder that causes trouble processing written words and numbers and makes it hard for people to read at a normal pace.
In her candid piece, Clarkson revealed that River Rose has been struggling at school because she can’t read as fast as her peers.
“I was driving my daughter to school yesterday, and she’s dyslexic,” she told the writer before praising him for the success he achieved in spite of his own battle with dyslexia. “You have told me that you’re dyslexic as well – I find that amazing, to tell my daughter that you’ve written, like, 40 books and you’re dyslexic.”
The singer went on to say River Rose was “getting bullied” for “not being able to read” as fast as her peers as she is still learning to cope with her disability.
Clarkson also took the opportunity to applaud famous people like Zachary Levi and Anthony Mackie for “empowering” her by talking openly about their own battles with the condition.
Meanwhile, Winkler cited statistical facts saying as much as one in five children struggles with some form of dyslexia.
“She’s part of the tribe,” he said before turning to the camera and saying: “River! How you learn has nothing to do with how brilliant you are.”
Admitting she had no idea just how common the condition was, Clarkson teared up before jokingly saying that her makeup artist was going to kill her as tears began flowing.
