An award-winning musician and jazz star was killed in a horrific accident after his car got struck by two trains.
Andrew Speight, 58, was a passionate musician and a local jazz legend from San Francisco who “lived the life of an artist in pursuit of his muse which was in jazz music.”
On Thursday afternoon, the man was driving his black car when he got stuck on the railroad near Burlingame’s Caltrain Broadway Station.
While the circumstances remain unclear, it is believed that Speight was unable to move his car off the train tracks in time to avoid a tragic accident.
Moments after his vehicle got stuck on the railroad, Speight was struck by a southbound train. Within minutes, the vehicle was also struck by a northbound train.
As the investigation has since revealed, the musician died in the first collision, whereas his vehicle was pictured crumpled on the tracks in the aftermath of the accident.
Speight was a jazz enthusiast who played at local bars and led programs at San Francisco State University and Michigan State University.
Previously, the music artist, who was born in Australia, also received an Aria Award for his 1999 album.
Paying a tribute to the dedicated musician were his friends and colleagues including Simon Rowe, the owner of Keys Jazz Bistro where Speight often performed in the past.
“He lived the life an artist in pursuit of his muse which was in jazz music,” Rowe said.
“He was constantly working on his playing, constantly learning to improve himself and with that, tirelessly creating community around the art form, both as a teacher and a mentor and an incredible alto saxophone player.
“The whole community is trying to process that and the best way to do that is to play beautiful music.”
