Jay Leno’s surgeon has spoken out and revealed that the actor may be left with permanent scarring of tissue after his shock accident.

Last Saturday, the 72-year-old actor, comedian, writer, and TV host suffered severe burns to his upper body and face after his 1907 steam engine car burst into flames.

After he was rushed to the hospital, the former Tonight Show host underwent emergency surgery and skin grafts.

Leno currently remains in a hyperbolic chamber that helps with the swelling and prevents him from contracting infections.

While the actor is said to be “doing pretty well” considering what happened to him, his surgeon now warned that he may be left with permanent scars as a result of the incident.

“All things considered, he’s doing pretty well. He’s got some serious injuries but he’s got a positive attitude and hopefully with a little bit of time he’ll be home and back to work at some point soon,” Dr. Peter H Grossman of Grossman Burn Center said in an interview with CNN.

“We’re hoping to get him as close to pre-injury stat status as we can. His injuries are serious. There may be some long-term marks that we’ll see. At this time it’s just a little too early to know.”

The surgeon further confirmed that Leno will undergo another procedure later this week.

While Leno is expected to make a “full recovery,” it remains unclear how long it will take for his wounds to heal.

Speaking of the hyperbolic chamber the actor was placed in following emergency procedures, Dr. Grossman added: “It helps decrease swelling, it helps increase blood flow with good oxygenation and it helps decrease bacteria.

“He’s had grafts that are not his own, meaning the skin we have from a skin bank or a donor, that’s what we do as a first stage.”

Our thoughts are with Leno as his recovery continues.
