Comedian Jay Leno was seen with bandaged hands and arms after his 1907 steam engine car burst into flames.
The 72-year-old reportedly suffered from serious burns to his upper body and has undergone surgery and skin grafts.
In a video obtained by Inside Edition, he can be seen wearing a blue hospital gown while laying down and moving his bandaged arms and hands.
Sources told TMZ that the left side of Leno’s face suffered severe burns.
In a statement, the comedian confirmed: “I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire. I am ok. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”
Dr. Peter H. Grossman of the Grossman Burn Center in LA said that Leno is in the chamber to prevent bacterial infections and help with swelling.
“It helps decrease swelling, it helps increase blood flow with good oxygenation and it helps decrease bacteria,” he told Inside Edition.
“He’s had grafts that are not his own, meaning the skin we have from a skin bank or a donor, that’s what we do as a first stage.”
Dr. Grossman also said that the comedian may have suffered third-degree burns and will have to undergo another surgery.
Leno suffered burns to his face, chest and hands but despite the incident, Grossman described him as a ‘kind and engaging patient.’
He also said that he is now ‘in good spirits.’
“As I’m getting to know Jay, I don’t think it’s going to be months,” he said. “I think he’s the kind of guy who’s gonna move forward.”
The doctor expects Leno to make a ‘full recovery’ from his injuries but he did not mention how long this could take.
