Police officers of Central Topeka said one got arrested after a homicide incident in Central Topeka.
The Topeka Police Department has confirmed a baby died to which officers responded after an assault early Wednesday morning in the 1400 block of SW Byron in Central Topeka.
Police were called to the 1400 block of S.W. Byron around 4:40 am. The location is located in an area just north of Washburn University.
The Topeka Police Department says when they arrived, they found a woman suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, and an infant suffering from life-threatening injuries. Both victims were transported to an area hospital but the infant later died.
Tray’vonne Da’mont Jones, 18, from Topeka, got arrested in connection with crimes linked to the attack, according to Shawnee County Jail records. No formal charges had been filed.
Luitenant Manuel Munoz said Jones and the victims were known to each other and the cause and manner of death remained under investigation.
Luitenant Munoz said: “There is no threat to the community from this incident. All people involved had been located and accounted for. The mother received hospital treatment, then was released. Police transported several people to police headquarters for questioning.”
Jones was booked at 6:10 pm Wednesday into the Shawnee County Jail, where he was being held without bond in connection with first-degree murder in the commission of a felony, reckless but unintentional second-degree murder, child abuse, aggravated child endangerment, aggravated battery.
Traffic was blocked Wednesday afternoon from entering the 1400 block of S.W. Byron. Yellow crime scene tape has been put up to keep people out of an extended area on the south side of that street.
That area ran from 1425 S.W. Byron west to Tortilla Jack’s Mexican Restaurant, 1618 S.W. Washburn Ave., while including an alley and the Tortilla Jack’s parking lot. People were still being allowed into the restaurant.
Officials are asking the public to avoid the area while the investigation continues. No other information has been released.
