The husband of a charity worker who was killed after being swept away by a tsunami is blaming himself for his wife’s death.
Angela Glover, 50, was a dedicated dog shelter owner who was found dead after a tsunami hit her home in Veitongo, Tonga, following a once-if-a-lifetime underwater volcano explosion.
Shortly after tens of thousands of locals were displaced because of the four-foot tsunami, Glover’s body was found and her family was notified of the discovery.
Since the woman’s tragic passing, her brother, Nick Eleini, has spoken out and revealed that Angela’s husband James can’t help but blame himself for his wife’s death.
“I was able to speak to James last night. He’s been able to communicate with us via satellite phone from the British Embassy. He’s safe, he has all his basic needs covered, he has shelter, food, water and money,” Eleini told BBC Breakfast.
“I don’t believe he sustained any serious injuries. He is naturally just shattered and guilt-ridden as to the events that took place. He’s quite naturally blaming himself for not being able to save Angela.”
It is believed that James survived the ordeal by holding on to a tree, whereas his wife was swept away by the powerful wave while trying to save their adopted dogs.
Eleini added: “It doesn’t matter how many times we tell him he has nothing to reproach himself for. He is carrying an incredible burden of guilt at the moment.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Glover reported that “a major humanitarian disaster” is currently unfolding in Tonga and that “a lot of the infrastructure is above ground; that has probably been completely destroyed.”
Our thoughts are with Angela’s family and friends during these challenging times.
