The human bones that were discovered in a landfill in Georgia are those of missing 2-year-old boy Quinton Simon, the FBI has confirmed.
This comes a week after his mother was arrested and charged with murder.
Investigators were searching the landfill after they suspected that the toddler’s body was thrown in a dumpster.
According to reports, the FBI used DNA analysis to confirm that the remains belonged to the two-year-old victim.
On November 21, Chatham County police said that Quinton’s mother, 22-year-old Leilani Simon, was arrested on charges of malice murder, concealing a person’s death, false, reporting, and making false statements about her child.
It was on October 5 when Simon reported her son missing from his playpen in their home. On November 18, it has been confirmed that the human bones found in the landfill are those of the 20-month-old boy.
Simon is now held in the Chatham County Jail.
Child Protective Services also removed her two other children from her custody.
A week before Quinton vanished, Simon had been ordered by the state to start paying child support. The grandmother had custody of Quinton.
Simon was told she must pay $150 a month for the boys. If one of them died, it would be reduced by $50.
On October 5, she claimed that she woke up at 9:30 am and the toddler was nowhere to be found.
Quinton’s babysitter immediately spoke out as she thought it was strange that she was told not to come that day only hours before Quinton was reported missing.
On Monday, FBI Atlanta said in a statement: “A monumental team effort was put forth by everyone involved in bringing closure to this horrific situation.
“The 5-week search to find Quinton would not have been successful without the dedicated service of several groups.”
