At least 13 people have been killed during a recent terrorist attack carried out by gunmen as horrifying sounds of gunshots and explosions filled the air.
According to local media reports, the incident took place in a hotel in the Somalian city of Mogadishu. The exact location of the attack was identified to be the Hayat hotel where gunmen barricaded the premises during the evening hours.
While the incident began yesterday evening, it didn’t end till morning hours as more horrifying sounds of explosions filled the air this morning.
Panic and fear gripped residents located inside while dozens of victims’ relatives were seen located outside, despite police trying to cordon off the area.
Security forces put up a tough battle against the gunmen who continued to stay inside for hours since the siege began yesterday.
The fighters are believed to arise from an Al-Qaeda affiliate called Al-Shabaab who blasted their way to make an entrance and prevented anyone else from making their way inside.
It has been revealed that scores of victims were located inside but according to officials, many of them including young children were rescued safely.
Witnesses described horrifying scenes that included spontaneous gunfire and really loud explosions that were heard into the afternoon hours of Saturday. But at the moment, details about the incident are still difficult to confirm as there is absolute chaos right now in the area.
Sources called the attack to be one of the biggest to arise in the city of Mogadishu, ever since the country’s new President was elected in May of this year.
Al-Shabaab has been declaring a deadly war against the country’s fragile government for quite some time now, nearly 15 years to be exact.
The government is yet to reveal any official statement on the matter but authorities claim the death toll of victims continues to increase and currently stands at 13.
