A husband and wife died in a horror hot air balloon accident while vacationing in Mexico City with their daughter.
Viridiana Becerril, 38, and Jose Nolasco, 50, of Caujimalpa de Morelos were on a trip to Mexico City when they took a hot air balloon ride together with their daughter, Regina, whose exact age remains unclear.
Moments after the family posed for a sweet family photo on the ground, they took to the skies and their hot air balloon caught fire.
After the aircraft burst into flames and began plummeting at great speed, both parents died.
Their daughter managed to survive by jumping out at the right moment to suffer non-life-threatening injuries including a broken arm and second-degree burns.
The authorities also revealed that a pilot may have been with the family when they flew over a pre-Hispanic pyramid site. The person operating the balloon, however, hasn’t yet been found.
Further investigation into the horrific accident revealed that the balloon was tethered to the ground for unknown reasons.
“It was the birthday of my daughter Viridiana, Regina’s mom, and they had prepared this ride as a surprise for her,” Regina’s grandmother revealed.
She also told the reporters that Regina remains in stable condition at the hospital where she is receiving treatment for her injuries.
Breaking into tears, the grandmother said Regina shared one final hug with her mom and dad before jumping out of the burning balloon.
“We send our condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances of Jose Nolasco and Viridiana Becerril who died in the hot air balloon tragedy in Teotihuacan. Our solidarity and prayers are with Regina and we wish her a speedy recovery,” local officials from Caujimalpa de Morelos said in a tribute to the family.
As of this writing, the cause of the fire remains to be determined. Our thoughts are with Regina and the family during this challenging time.
