A family home has been destroyed and their pet cat has tragically died after their Tesla car caught fire while charging in the garage.
Emergency services were called to the property in Prestons, Sydney on Sunday.
According to reports, the fire is said to have been started by a Tesla car, which was charging in the garage.
A firefighter at the scene said: “The fire he fire has destroyed the garage and two vehicles inside. The fire has travelled through to the house and destroyed the kitchen.
“Firefighters managed to cut off the fire and save the rest of the building.
“Unfortunately, one cat was lost in the fire and the rest of the house suffered smoke damage.”
Police are still investigating the incident and have set up a crime scene.
Teslas, which are advertised as top-of-the-range and luxury cars, are a popular electric vehicle brand founded by Elon Musk. They cost anywhere between $63,000 to $192,000.
In a report in 2020, Tesla said that its vehicle were 11 times less likely to catch fire than petrol vehicles.
One person commented: “Compared to combustion engine vehicle, the rare of fires and their severity is much higher in these virtue signaling machines.”
Another said: “Wouldn’t it have been safer charging on the drive. I don’t leave any appliances running whilst I’m out or asleep. Too may stories about electricals bursting into flames.”
A third added: “I dont think its from the car but from a faulty mobile device left inside the car charging while the car been on charger. Tesla are the best cars , never has any fire issues. Period.”
Someone else wrote: “Electric cars are the future, apparently. I hope my new diesel will be safer.”
