A Holocaust survivor who survived atrocities committed by Hitler’s Nazis now died in fear while hiding from Putin’s army.
91-year-old Vanda Obiedkova from Ukraine was just 10 when the Nazis invaded her country and executed her mother.
81 years after surviving World War 2 by sitting it out in a Mariupol basement, the brave survivor was once again forced into hiding after the Russian army invaded Ukraine.
In fear of their lives, Vanda and her family took shelter in a freezing basement with little to no food and water.
There, the ill and “emaciated” elderly lady passed away following two weeks of inhumane conditions that left her too weak to stand up.
As the woman’s family recalled, the 91-year-old was terrified and confused not knowing why the history is repeating itself.
“Why is this happening?” she kept on asking in the moments leading to her death.
Following her passing, Vanda’s family members risked their lives and left their shelter to bury the woman despite constant Russian shelling.
The 91-year-old was reportedly buried at a public park less than a mile away from the sea.
“Mama didn’t deserve such a death,” Vanda’s tearful daughter, Larissa, expressed after the family finally made it to a safe location following weeks of bombing.
Larissa added how she was forced to watch “helplessly as her mother’s life ebbed away, remaining at her side until the last moment.”
Vanda’s death comes 81 years after Nazi Germany stormed Mariupol and killed her mother. It is estimated that up to 16,000 Jews were killed in the city in October 1941.
As a young and frightened girl, Vanda only managed to survive the genocide by evading the Nazis and hiding in a basement.
