Hogan’s Heroes star Robert Clary has died at the age of 96, his family confirmed.
The 96-year-old French-American actor was a man of great acting talent and a Holocaust survivor who was best known for his role as Corporal Louis LeBeau in the CBS sitcom Hogan’s Heroes.
The actor, who survived imprisonment at the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz where his parents were killed, appeared in the CBS series for several seasons between 1965 to April 1971.
Before his death, Clary remained the sole survivor of the main cast of Hogan’s Heroes.
In his decades-long career, the actor also appeared in various soap operas including The Young and the Restless, The Bold and The Beautiful, and Days of Our Lives. He was also featured in movies such as The Hindenburg and A New Kind of Love on top of contributing to multiple jazz records with his singing.
Previously, Clary recalled his imprisonment at Auschwitz and recalled what his mother had told him before she was killed.
“My mother said the most remarkable thing. She said, ‘Behave.’ She probably knew me as a brat. She said, ‘Behave. Do what they tell you to do,’” he told THR in 2015.
The TV star also said he credited his ability to perform and entertain for his survival at the concentration camp.
“Singing, entertaining and being in kind of good health at my age, that’s why I survived,” he admitted.
“For 36 years I kept these experiences during the war locked up inside myself. But those who are attempting to deny the Holocaust, my suffering and the suffering of millions of others have forced me to speak out.”
Our thoughts are with Robert’s family and friends during this challenging time.
