The devastated family of an 8-year-old Highland Park shooting victim has confirmed that their son was left paralyzed from the waist down after being shot during the July 4th massacre.
According to reports, Cooper Roberts’ spinal cord was left severed during the parade attack that also left his twin brother and mother injured.
Speaking to CBS News, the spokesperson for the family said: “It’s going to be a new normal for him moving forward. It sounds (like) he’ll have significant issues moving forward, especially with walking.”
Doctors have confirmed that it is unlikely the 8-year-old boy will ever walk again because of the severity of his spinal cord injury.
Anthony Loizzi continued: “At this time, the doctors do not believe that he suffered any brain damage or cognitive impact from the shooting.”
Cooper just woke up and has been asking to see his twin brother and their dog.
His twin brother, Luke, was also rushed to hospital with shrapnel wounds but was discharged after medics managed to remove most of the debris.
The twins’ mother, Keely Roberts, was also shot in her feet and legs. She underwent at least two surgeries but insisted on being released early to be with her children.
“After she received her second surgery, and then she received news that Cooper’s spinal cord had been severed, she told her doctors and nurses that they should either discharge her, or she’d walk out on her own,” the spokesperson said.
Cooper underwent several operations, including one in which doctors “finally closed his belly.”
Cooper was described as a ‘very active’ boy with a passion for baseball. He is also a fan of Milwaukee Brewers.
During the game on Friday, the Brewers decided to hang a jersey in their dugout with the family name Roberts on the back.
