It has since come to light that the young man had at least two previous run-ins with the police and that he was allowed to buy a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 rifle – among other weapons including a Glock 43 pistol and a Remington 700 rifle – even after threatening to kill himself and his family.

According to the authorities, the police arrived to Crimo’s family home on two occasions back in 2019.

“[In April 2019] they responded to the residence, spoke to him, his parents and the matter was being handled with the mental health profession. There was no law enforcement action to be taken,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office previously confirmed.

“In September 2019, a family remember reported that he said he was going to ‘kill everyone’ and that he had a collection of knives. They responded and took 16 knives and a dagger from his home.”

The report also states that Crimo agreed for the police to take away his sword, dagger, and a collection of 16 knives.

“Robert E. Crimo III was informed that if he needed any police and/or medical assistance to contact us. Mother, Denise, was present and also informed that DCFS would be contacted and informed that the agency has service referral assistance,” the report says.

Just months after the incident, Robert’s father, Bob Crimo, allegedly helped his son apply for a FOID card which the young man later used to buy his murder weapon.
