A female neighbor of the Highland Park shooter is blaming herself for the massacre and reveals how she shutdown their friendship after he started showing a romantic interest in her.
The 21-year-old woman said her refusal to date him could have sparked Bobby Crimo’s July 4 rampage, taking seven lives and leaving dozens more injured.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: “I’m blaming myself.”
According to the news outlet, the woman lives near Crimos’ home in Highwood.
“We didn’t date, but he did like me, he did have interest in me,” the neighbor expressed. “But my parents are strict and I don’t date. So I told him no, but we can be friends.”
Crimo shot seven people and left dozens more injured after he climbed on a store’s rooftop and fired 70 rounds into the parade.
He managed to escape by disguising as a woman and joining the crowd but was arrested eight hours later in Lake Forest while driving his mother’s vehicle.
Crimo’s neighbor said she rejected him when they both worked at Panera Bread before it was temporarily closed because of the pandemic.
She said that the gunman told her that he wanted to open a sandwich shop with his father.
“Then he said, no I want to stay at Panera if you are working there. I want to stay with you. I was like, don’t do that. I wasn’t even sure if I liked him like that. I said don’t do that, we’re only friends. I’m sorry if I was too nice to you. You picked it up wrong.
“I kind of just stopped talking to him then. I didn’t block him, but I did delete his messages.”
She continued: “I feel like if I’d kept talking to him, if I’d been more social with him, maybe this would not have happened. Maybe he didn’t have a reason to snap.”
