The Highland Park shooter reportedly disguised himself in a women’s clothing before carrying out the July 4’s attack and managed to flee before going to his mother’s home, police said.
Robert ‘Bobby’ Crimo, 21, remains in custody and is being questioned by authorities.
On Tuesday, police revealed the gunman owned two rifles, one that was discovered in his car and one that he used in the attack.
The gunman’s motive remains unclear but authorities said that he had been planning the massacre for several weeks.
“We have not developed a motive from him,” said Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Crimo legally bought two rifles along with other weapons, purchasing them at different locations.
After Monday’s attack, he reportedly fled among the crowd by pretending to be one of the victims before going to his mother’s home.
Officers said they do not think the mother knew that his son was the gunman when she gave her car to him and he immediately drove away in a Honda Fit.
Crimo, who is obsessed with the numbers 47, has a 47 tattoo on his cheek. The side of his vehicle, which was left abandoned outside his home on Tuesday, also has a huge 47 on it.
His shocked uncle, Paul Crimo, said that the 21-year-old was behaving normally the day before, adding that he showed ‘no signs of violence.’
Speaking to CNN, he said: “I’m heartbroken. I’m so heartbroken. There were no signs that I saw that would make him do this. He’s a quiet kid. He’s usually on his own. He’s a lonely, quiet person. He keeps everything to himself.”
“Everything was as normal,” the uncle continued. “We are good people here, and to have this is devastating. I’m so heartbroken for all the families who lost their lives.”
The gunman was arrested around 6:30 pm, over eight hours after the attack.
