At least three dozen people were injured on a Hawaiian Airlines flight after a “mass emergency” in the shape of severe turbulence.
The Sunday flight from Phoenix, Arizona, to Honolulu, Hawaii, was interrupted by severe turbulence that took place some thirty minutes before the Hawaiian Airlines plane was set to land.
According to the preliminary reports, the plane suffered extreme turbulence as a result of passing through a thunderstorm at 36,000 feet, whereas a cold front was responsible for bringing in strong winds that rocked the aircraft and the passengers inside.
We can so far confirm that at least 35 people, including children, on Flight HA35 were injured. 11 passengers are believed to have suffered severe injuries including cuts, bruises, and injuries to the head and neck.
Following the bumpy ride, emergency services and the Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Team were spotted evacuating injured passengers from the plane at the airport.
It was initially reported that some twenty people were rushed to the ER. Out of eleven seriously injured passengers, nine are believed to be in stable condition.
“Scariest experience flying: very strong turbulence happened mid flight & some ppl with head injuries from hitting the ceiling. I’m safe just very shaken up,” one Twitter user who claimed to have been on the devastating flight wrote.
“It’s more serious than I thought. Some ppl in the back with broken neck, bleeding on the head & face. I hope they all recover soon as this was a very traumatic event.”
The shaken passenger later added: “Made it home safe but will be going to the hospital later to check if I have an injury from whiplash or on my waist from the seatbelt when I floated up from my seat a bit.”
