A man who shot and killed three people in a shooting attack inside a Danish shopping mall on Sunday has been charged and detained in a psychiatric ward.
22-year-old Noah Esbensen reportedly shot three people using a rifle inside Field’s mall at around 5:30 pm.
The rampage lasted for 13 minutes before he was arrested outside the building.
Police reinforcements were deployed to the scene, advising shoppers to stay put and wait for police assistance.
Officers also asked witnesses to reach out to them and called out people visiting the mall to call their loved ones to let them know that they are safe.
On Monday, Esbensen was taken to court where he was charged with murder.
Authorities said that the 22-year-old has mental health problems and there was no indication that the shooting attack was an act of terror.
His victims are two 17-year-olds – one female and one make, and a 47-year-old Russian national who had been living in the country.
Four others were left in critical condition after being shot.
Ebensen had shared videos on social media the day before the shooting, in which he showed off his rifle and handgun. He also uploaded playlists entitled ‘Last Thing to Listen To’ and ‘Killer Music’, writing ‘Quetiapine does not work.’
Quetiapine is an anti-psychotic medication used for treating schizophrenia, major depression, and bipolar disorder.
It is believed he had sought medical attention before the attack.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement on Sunday: “Denmark was hit by a cruel attack on Sunday night. Several were killed. Even more wounded. Innocent families shopping or eating out. Children, adolescents and adults.
“Our beautiful and usually so safe capital was changed in a split second. I want to encourage the Danes to stand together and support each other in this difficult times.”
