A gunman has reportedly opened fire on Catholic worshippers at a church in Nigeria, killing at least 50 people while more casualties are feared as he detonated explosives too.
According to local media reports, the gunman carried out the brutal and senseless act at the St. Francis Catholic Church in the Owo Town in the Ordo State.
Sources added how the leading local politician by the name of Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole was also killed in the incident alongside a number of other victims including children.
In the same way, more sources have gone on to speak about how the priest had also been abducted during the terrifying incident as more devastating facts begin to be revealed by the local media outlets in the country.
Ondo is believed to be the nation’s most peaceful location and while security has remained to be a major problem in a number of other places, this is definitely a first for many to witness in the nation.
The violence is said to have taken place during the Sunday service on Pentecost in the southwestern part of the nation.
Nigeria is believed to have struggled with its security on so many levels and this appears to be no exception, explained reports.
For now, there has been no announcement of any military or extremist group coming in to take responsibility for the tragedy as was observed in similar attacks in the nation’s past.
The nation’s President has condemned the horrifying incident, calling it the most heinous killing or murder of innocent worshippers who had gathered for a religious gathering.
