The grandfather of the 18-year-old gunman who shot and killed 19 fourth graders and two teachers at an elementary school has spoken out.
Salvador Ramos’s grandfather has said that the family had no idea the teen, who shot his grandmother before driving to Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, legally bought two AR-15s after celebrating his birthday.
He described his grandson as a quiet boy who spent most of his time in his bedroom.
Ramos’s grandmother, Celia Martinez, took the teen to Applebee’s to celebrate his 18th birthday on May 16.
Speaking to ABC News, her husband Rolando Reyes said they had no idea their grandson purchased two AR-15s and over 300 rounds of gun ammunition at the Oasis Outback store.
“I didn’t know he had weapons. If I’d have known, I would have reported it,” said Rolando.
According to reports, the gunman started living with his grandparents after he had an argument with his mother over a Wi-Fi connection in their home.
Despite being shot in the head, Ramos’s grandmother managed to survive. She is currently in the hospital.
The gunman’s grandfather said that the teen was quiet but would sometimes go with him to work.
“Sometimes I’d take him to work with me. Not all the time, but sometimes,” Rolando said.
“This past year he didn’t go to school. He didn’t graduate. You would try to tell him but kids nowadays they think they know everything. He was very quiet, he didn’t talk very much.”
The grandfather said that he was out of their home when the shooting happened. He received a call from his neighbor telling him that his wife had been shot.
“The neighbor called me and said she’d been shot. When I came over here he said he’d taken off. It still hasn’t sunk in,” he added.
