At least three people were killed and eleven others were injured after a 16-year-old gunman opened fire at his former schools in southeastern Brazil.

According to reports, the teen waited for a group of teachers before he opened fire at his former school, taking the lives of two people and injuring nine others.

The shooter then ran to a nearby private school where he shot and killed a young girl and left two others injured, officials in the town of Aracruz in Espirito Santo state said.

Governor Renato Casagrande confirmed that the gunman has been arrested as he declared three days of mourning in the state.

During a news conference, he said: “He was a student at (the first) school until June, a 16-year-old minor. His family then transferred him to another school. We have information he was undergoing psychiatric treatment.”

He also said that some of the survivors have life-threatening injuries.

“We are rooting and praying for them to recover,” he added.

Surveillance footage showed the 16-year-old gunman running into the school, wearing military-style camouflage.

He then rushed through the hallways where teachers started running away as he started shooting at them.

According to the Brazilian news website Folha Vitoria, most of the victims were teachers.

“It is the biggest tragedy our city has ever seen; the whole city is shocked. At the state school, all the victims are teachers. It is sad,” said Dr. Coutinho, the mayor of Aracruz.

“We are already receiving security reinforcements, classes are suspended until Monday.”

The gunman, a son of a policeman, reportedly used two handguns in the rampage. He appeared to have planned the shooting, breaking in through a locked door and entering the teachers’ lounge.

“He was looking to shoot people. He opened fire on the first people he came across,” the governor continued.

Officers were seen carrying the bodies of the victims and loading them in police trucks outside the school.
