A man died and 11 others were left wounded – including three young children – after a fire broke out at an outdoor concert in Dallas on Sunday.
Police rushed to an open field in Oak Cliff at around 12:13 am where 2,000 people had been enjoying the Second Annual Epic Easter Bike Out and Field Party.
Hosted by ‘Bossman Bubba,’ the event was supposed to be a ‘trail ride’ that features rapper Big Boogie.
According to a preliminary investigation, one person fired a gun and another person opened fire.
Some attendees said that there were multiple gunmen and that the gunfire was triggered by a fight, WFAA reported.
The shooting sent festivalgoers fleeing for their lives, causing a minor stampede.
26-year-old Kealon Dejuane Gilmore was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head. He was declared dead at the scene.
His friend took to Facebook and paid tribute, remembering him as a ‘great kid.’
“I never thought it would be one of my friends. It’s so sad, man it’s so sad. I wouldn’t even expect for nothing to happen to you like that. Seems like the good ones always go first,” Tspeed said. “I actually knew this dude, actually went to school with this dude. This is a great kid, man.”
Michelle White, 43, said that EMS and police had a hard time getting through the crowd. “I’ve never felt more helpless in my life,” she expressed.
She said that she helped two people, a woman who was grazed by a bullet and a man who was shot in the leg, get into a vehicle and tried to drive through the panicked crowd.
Another witness told WFAA that the concert was ‘jam-packed.’
“Everybody was running,” Lulu Smith said. “It was so jam-packed right here, you couldn’t get in or out. When I got to my car, somebody was shooting. I rolled down my window and I heard shots.”
Organizers had advertised that police officers would be on-site for security – a claim that the Dallas Police Department is now investigating.
