A grieving son said he went to visit his 77-year-old mother but got to her ‘a few hours too late’ after he found her dead inside their home.
Ellen Bowles was attacked by a carjacker in the garage of her $800,000 home in Atlanta, Georgia. She was stabbed to death after she tried to stop the culprit from stealing her Lexus.
Her body was found by her son Michael Bowles, 30, who traveled to see her for the holidays.
“I was on my way to visit her for the holidays and got to her a few hours too late,” the heartbroken son said at a vigil for his mother.
“Finding her like that is something that will be with me forever. What happened to her was her worst nightmare. It’s most people’s worst nightmare,” he continued.
“I am committed to getting the word out about this outrageous tragedy. I want everyone to understand that none of us are really safe and if this can happen to mom, then it can happen to anyone.
“Mom was the North Star in my world. She was a beautiful soul and taught me how to approach the world with empathy.”
23-year-old Antonio Brown has been arrested on suspicion of murder, hijacking a motor vehicle, abuse of a disabled or elderly person, possession of a knife, and aggravated battery.
Photos show him entering Bowle’s 2021 Lexus SUV and it is believed that the 77-year-old grandma may have walked in on him as he tried to take the vehicle.
It is unclear who he managed to enter the gated community and police admitted that they are not sure if only one person is involved.
The car was later found dumped in DeKalb county after being driven throughout the city.
