The 66-year-old grandmother of Texas gunman Salvador Ramos may never speak again after the bullet hit her in the jaw and left her teeth shattered.
Celia ‘Sally’ Gonzales was Ramos’ first victim. The 18-year-old shot her in the face on the morning of May 24 after an argument over his phone bill.
Her second-cousin, Jason Ybarra, told The New York Post that although the grandmother is doing well, “she may never be able to talk again.”
Ybarra also said that Gonzales is now writing to communicate.
According to reports, Ramos stole his grandparents’ Ford pickup truck after he shot his grandmother and drove to Robb Elementary School to start his shooting rampage that left 19 students and two teachers dead.
Ramos’s grandfather, Rolando Reyes, told the Post that his wife Gonzales was ‘conscious’ but in pain.
“She had a notebook where she writes what she’s trying to say, but when we can’t make it out, she gets frustrated,” Reyes said.
Gonzales’s daughter, Natalie Salazar, set up a GoFundMe page for the grandmother’s medical expenses. She has had four major surgeries since the shooting and will still have more.
“My mom was shot in the face and left to die alone in her home by her very own grandson,” Natalie said.
“It was by the grace of God that she was able to get up off the floor and walk to a neighbors home and ask for help.”
The page has raised more than $7,000.
A crowdfunding page raised for the orphaned children of Texas teacher Irma Garcia and her husband Joe who died from a broken heart has raised more than $2.6 million.
