The 95-year-old grandmother who was tasered by the police in a shocking incident is not expected to survive the ordeal.
Clare Nowland is a dementia sufferer from NSW, Australia, who was at Yallambee Lodge near Cooma when the police stormed the care home for the aged and shot the elderly woman with a Taser.
The incident took place early Wednesday morning, and the blast caused Nowland to fall to the floor and bump her head.
While the exact circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear, the police were reportedly called to the care home after staff members reported a “knife” wielding patient.
The woman’s family suggested Nowland might have been holding a butter knife while standing at the doorway of her room and preparing her toast.
After getting tasered, the grandmother collapsed and suffered a head injury. She was also left with “two holes in her chest” as a result of the prongs from the taser.
The woman has since been put in end-of-life care, and she is not expected to survive the ordeal.
NSW initially did not release the bodycam footage from the care home while calling the incident simply as an “interaction.”
“She could have wanting to make toast with a bread and butter knife, she’s confused. Her family is just incredulous (at what happened),” community advocate Andrew Thaler said in an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
He went on to reveal that the patient’s family has gathered to be by her bedside and is preparing for the worst.
Thaler also suggested that Yallambee Lodge might have been understaffed with just two workers on the shift looking after forty patients at the time of the incident.
“[There was] a lack of training and for some of these workers, English is not their first language, they may have panicked,” Thaler added.
