A 72-year-old grandmother from Kentucky was crushed to death by a 2,600 Denny’s restaurant sign after it fell on her car.
According to reports, Lillian Mae Curtis was on her way home from picking up her husband, Lloyd Curtis, from a hospital after he underwent heart surgery when the tragic incident happened.
She and her daughter Mary Graham were sitting in the backseat when the sign crushed their car.
Mr. Curtis and Ms. Graham were left injured.
Reports said that the family have stopped at the fast food restaurant when the sign was blown away by strong winds.
Heartbreaking photos of the family’s blue vehicle were shared online and showed the extensive damage of the sign to the back of the car.
Mrs. Curtis got trapped in the back of the vehicle after it was crushed and had to be removed by rescuers.
Speaking to WDRB News, Mrs. Curtis’s granddaughter Amy Nichols said that her grandmother had sustained a ‘catastrophic’ head injury.
She also said that her mother, Ms. Graham, was left with a small chest injury but has since returned home from the hospital.
In a heartfelt tribute online, Ms. Nichols said: “his woman right here my beautiful nanny Lillian Mae Curtis was the matriarch of our family she was the strongest woman I have ever seen in my life.”
She continued: “I don’t know how myself or my family can even begin to live in a cold world without her in it. She was my biggest supporter in life and always had me when nobody else did. I am so lost right now I can’t even function.
“She was my Nanny she was my second momma she was everything to me. I would give my life to have her back. I love you so much nanny. I just want to hug you again and smell your cologne and tell you I love you. How do I say goodbye to you I wish it would of been me in that backseat not you.
“I just want you back..”
