The grieving son of an elderly man who died after getting trapped in a boiling hot bath has spoken out and demanded justice.
75-year-old Wallace Hunter of Eaglesham, Scotland, suffered third-degree burns to 83 percent of his body in December 2019 after getting trapped in a scorching bath at Pitlochry Hydro Hotel.
The man’s son, Keir, has since launched a civil action and called for criminal charges over the incident at the hotel whose owners liquidated their company in 2020. The civil action is now set to undergo a fatal accident inquiry.
For the first time since the tragedy, Keir has also spoken out and revealed that his family is constantly thinking about the preventable accident.
Keir also recalled his father’s stay at the hotel and revealed that the man was unable to climb out of the bath, whereas the first responders couldn’t reach him for more than an hour because the door of his room was bolted from the inside and opening outwards rather than inwards.
“Had they been able to get to him quickly there’s no question he would still be here. The guests, then the police, were smashing fire extinguishers off the door, it was chaos. And that was on this side of the door,” he said.
“My family ruminate on my dad’s experience on the other side of the door, facing his fate and knowing that people were trying to get to him.
“The hour-and-a-half became a horror story and the experience my father endured is hard to comprehend.”
After the rescuers finally got inside the room, the horror didn’t end and the family was in for a shock when they saw the extent of the injuries their beloved father, husband, and grandfather had suffered.
“The horror continued when finally having got my dad out, the emergency services tried in vain to perform CPR. My mother witnessed the whole thing. As well as losing her husband, the experience has taken a massive toll on her,” Keir added.
“The police officers who I spoke to, who are obviously hardened to accidents, told me it was horrific and it was the worst incident they had ever attended.”
Keir is now seeking damages in a suit against the hotel’s previous owners who allegedly kept the business running as is despite complaints of water going from freezing to scalding hot.
“So here you have a hotel accepting elderly and more vulnerable guests while there are claims about the hot water,” the son says. “There’s no way this should not have been resolved prior, there should have been protocols in place.”
Keir went on to say that the family struggles to accept his father’s death and the idea that no one was held accountable for his passing.
