A governor and his wife have been accused of using the 5-month-old boy they adopted for marketing on Instagram and now they are under federal investigation.
Mexican governor Samuel Garcia and his influencer wife Mariana Rodriguez got special permission to take Emilio home from the shelter where he lives.
The little boy was diagnosed with schizencephaly, a rare birth defect that produces clefts or slits in the brain’s hemispheres.
However, Garcia and Rodriguez were slammed by human rights groups that accused the couple of using the child to give free publicity to the governor’s political party and private companies.
One photo shows Garcia in branded gym workout gear standing beside Rodriguez while she carried Emilio. Another photo shows the influencer – who has over two million followers on Instagram – and the baby wearing jerseys of Mexican soccer club Tigres UNAL.
More photos show Rodrigue posing with Emilio.
The National System for Integral Family Development said in a statement: “By showing the face of the five-month-old child in a video on the social networks of the aforementioned couple and after it was replicated by some media outlets, in addition to revealing his name and the health problems he faces, there is a clear violation of right.”
The Network for the Rights of the Child also expressed their concern about the “excessive and unnecessary exposition” that the couple subjected Emilio to even if they hold “a legitimate interest in his life and his future.”
Save the Children’s local chapter also took to Twitter and said that Rodriguez and Garcia “may even have committed human trafficking for using (Emilio’s) image for political and commercial purposes in the communications of their social networks.”
