A girlfriend watched in horror as her boyfriend plunged to his death in the River Thames while on a video call during a night out.
25-year-old James East was being directed by Arabella Ashfield to their taxi when he tragically fell.
The couple had been out to celebrate the 18th birthday of Ashfield’s sister when the tragic incident happened after East sat on a walled area of the bridge.
According to reports, East was in the water for almost on hour but he died even before entering the water as he suffered fatal head injuries.
His grieving sister, Abigail Bladen, said Ashfield has ‘gone through hell’ as she saw how the incident unfolded.
“His poor girlfriend, Arabella, was actually on Facetime to him trying to direct him to their taxi, and she has gone through hell now as she has watched that happen.”
“He was in the water for 50 minutes and then they found him and took him to hospital where they worked on him for three hours to try and save him,” Bladen said.
“When he had the post mortem, it was found that he was dead before he entered the water due to his head injuries, but they didn’t realize that.”
Because East went into the water medics initially thought he had drowned but it was actually his head that suffered.
Doctors tried to save him for three hours but he died of head injuries.
The incident comes only six weeks after East landed his dream job as a business development executive at Trybe in London.
“He absolutely loved London and he used to joke that he only ever used to come home to see his niece, but we are a close family and he is a home bird at heart,” Bladen continued.
“We’re just devastated. It’s awful, he’s so young and had so much to look forward to.”
