The grieving grandmother of a 10-year-old student killed in a mass school shooting in Texas has revealed that the young girl had begged to stay home that morning.
Jailah Nicole Silguero was one of the students who died in America’s latest mass shooting on Tuesday when Salvador Ramos, 18, stormed into their classroom and opened fire.
Only hours before the massacre, Jailah had begged his mother to stay home that day but she was told that she had to go to school.
Relatives say that Jailah’s mother, Veronica, is now punishing herself because of the incident.
In an interview with the Daily Beast, the girl’s grieving grandmother, Linda Gonzales, said: “Jailah didn’t want to go to school (on Tuesday).
“That’s what her momma was really upset about last night: ‘If only I had let her stay home.’ She wanted to stay home with momma.”
Jailah and her cousin Jayce Carmelo Luevanos died in the shooting, only a week after the family held a funeral for Veronica’s father who died in Mexico.
“I told Veronica last night: ‘Just look at it as your daddy taking your baby with him,’” Gonzales said.
The family described the hours-long wait to get news of Jayce and Jailah, going back and forth between the elementary school and a civic center – praying desperately that the two managed to escape.
Then the devastating news came late into the night: both Jailah and Jayce had been killed in the shooting.
Governor Greg Abott said that the gunman shot his 66-year-old grandmother in the face before driving to Robb Elementary School.
“I consider this person to have been pure evil,” he said.
