A young girl was fatally shot outside her family home while petting a horse that was passing by her home.
8-year-old Arbrie Anthony was a “happy” and “loving” child who was shot dead outside her home in the 2000 block of 3rd Avenue in Augusta, Georgia, on Saturday evening.
According to the reports, the young girl wanted to pet horses after spotting two horse riders passing by the front yard of the family’s home.
While adoring the animals, Arbrie was fatally shot by a gunman who fired several rounds while passing by the house in an orange Jeep Compass Trailhawk.
As the police believe, the child was likely a victim of crossfire stemming from gun violence rather than the shooter’s intended target.
Though it is too early to confirm or rule out anything, the authorities suggested Arbrie might have gotten caught up in a “retaliatory” attack that “may have involved gangs.”
“These are cowards. No matter what your beef is, no matter what your intent is, when children are present, they get a pass… it’s always been that way,” Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree expressed.
After the shooting, little Arbrie was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her head. She was soon after pronounced dead.
One of the horses that the 8-year-old was petting was also critically wounded in the shooting. The animal died on the following day.
Following the unprovoked attack, Arbrie’s father spoke out and urged the gunmen to turn themselves in.
“I got on the ground, and the first thing when I got up, I yelled for her. She didn’t respond back and I picked her up and rushed her to the hospital,” Arthur Anthony told WJBF. “They took my heart.”
Meanwhile, the girl’s aunt, Jamila McDaniel, recalled Arbrie as a “happy child, a loving child” who “loved to do stuff loved going places.”
The shooting remains under investigation.
