A 16-year-old girl was fatally stabbed by another teen outside a McDonald’s in Washington, DC after a fight over a sweet and sour sauce, authorities have revealed.
The teen has been charged with second-degree murder after Naima Liggon from Waldorf, Maryland, was killed on August 27.
According to reports, Liggon picked up her meal and left the fast food restaurant at around 2 am when she got into a verbal argument with another 16-year-old girl.
Their fight turned physical and Liggon was reportedly stabbed twice. She was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to her serious injuries.
During the initial hearing at a D.C. Superior Court, it was revealed that the teens involved were part of a group of five girls who met at the Birchwood Recreation Center in Oxon Hill and then drove to the District to attend a party.
After the party, the group went to McDonald’s and had ‘an argument over sweet-and-sour sauce,’ said Detective Brendan Jasper.
The detective also claimed that Liggon and another teen started assaulting their friend who suddenly lunged at the victim before hopping into a vehicle.
Liggon is said to have been stabbed with a 7-inch pocketknife in her abdomen and chest.
The suspect has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed, felony assault, carrying a dangerous weapon, and assault with intent to kill.
Her attorney argued that the teen acted in self-defense, noting that she had no prior criminal history.
But prosecutor Priscilla Guerrero said that the fight was over when the teen attacked the victim with a knife.
“She was the only person who brought a knife to a fistfight.”
D.C. Superior Court Judge Sherri Beatty-Arthur also said: “At the end of the day, someone is dead over a dispute over sauce.”
The victim’s grieving mother, Joy Liggon, told WTOP: “I can’t understand how any type of a fight, whether it’s over sweet-and-sour sauce or any other topic, could result in a murder. Naima was beautiful, smart … she was funny, unique. She loves life.”
