A 15-year-old girl lost her leg while she was swimming in 5ft deep water on a Florida beach after being attacked by a shark.
According to reports, the teen was attacked near Grassy Island off Keaton Beach and was saved by a family member who beat the predator off her.
The young woman was airlifted to a Tallahassee hospital with severe injuries, said the sheriff’s office. She underwent surgery and is expected to survive.
The teen was scalloping in 5ft deep waters when she was attacked by the shark.
“Swimmers and scallopers are cautioned to be alert, vigilant, and practice shark safety,” said the sheriff’s office after the incident.
Some of the rules swimmers need to follow include not entering the waters near fishermen and sandbars where sharks usually like to congregate, never swimming alone, and avoiding swimming near large schools of fish.
In another separate incident, an elderly man suffered severe injuries to his leg and stomach at Lovers Point Beach in Monterey Bay, California.
62-year-old Steve Bruemmer was reportedly attacked by a shark around 11 am on June 22 and was rushed to Natividad Medical Center.
Speaking to NBC Bay News, Brummer said he had been swimming in the bay at least two times a week for the past decade.
A police officer, a nurse, and a surfer teaching a safety class heard the man’s cries for help and rushed to help him.
Bruemmer expressed gratitude for those who helped him and he was also grateful to have survived the attack.
As of July 1, there have been 32 shark attack bites and four fatal attacks reported in 2022, Tracking Sharks reported.
If a swimmer encounters a shark, experts recommend remaining still. If the predator attacks, it is recommended to punch the shark in the nose due to all sensitive tissues.
