A 10-year-old girl who got pregnant after being assaulted by a 27-year-old man has been forced to travel to another state to get an abortion after Roe v Wade ruling was overturned by the Supreme Court.
Gerson Fuentes from Ohio has been charged with impregnating the young girl after police said that he confessed to assaulting the victim two different times, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
The incident made headlines when she traveled to Indiana from Ohio to get an abortion.
On Wednesday, Fuentes was arraigned after some conservatives had questioned whether the case was real.
His arrest comes a day after Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said his office did not hear a ‘whisper’ about the child who had to cross state lines to get an abortion.
Speaking to Fox News, Yost said that a police report was never filed involving the girl and that the office “works closely” with law enforcement.
“We have regular contact with prosecutors and local police and sheriffs, not a whisper anywhere,” he said.
On Wednesday, a detective testified that Columbus police learned about the victim’s pregnancy through a referral by Franklin County Children Services made by the girl’s mother on June 22. Two days later, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.
On June 30, the young girl crossed state lines and had an abortion in Indianapolis.
According to reports, the child was 6 weeks and 3 days pregnant, making her ineligible by only three days to receive the procedure in Ohio.
Fuentes was given a $2 million bond. He is currently in the Franklin County Jail.
After the news of the arrest, the AG’s office said in a statement: “My heart aches for the pain suffered by this young child. I am grateful for the diligent work of the Columbus Police Department in securing a confession and getting a rap*st off the street.
“Justice must be served and BCI stands ready to support law enforcement across Ohio putting these criminals behind bars.”
