A young girl died tragically after doctors missed multiple opportunities to treat her and save her life.
4-year-old Eva Hayden from Kirkby, England, collapsed and died from sepsis back in 2020 despite the medics’ numerous attempts to resuscitate the child.
As her family revealed, the young girl developed an infection in her foot in late 2019. After being admitted to Ormskirk District General Hospital, and later transferred to Alder Hey, Eva was prescribed oral antibiotics and discharged.
Later, a blood analysis revealed that the 4-year-old suffered neutropenia, a lack of neutrophils – a type of white blood cells.
Despite this finding, the doctors at Ormskirk allegedly took no further action and dismissed the condition.
In January 2020, the girl fell ill and developed rashes over most of her body, prompting her family to take her to the walk-in center in Kirby where they were told to visit the Alder Hey ER immediately.
Again, however, the girl was swiftly discharged from the hospital with medics saying she was suffering from a virus.
Days later, Eva’s condition deteriorated drastically and she was pronounced dead at the ER despite the medics’ several attempts to resuscitate her.
According to the autopsy, the 4-year-old died from bone marrow hypoplasia and sepsis. Coroner Andre Rebello also confirmed that doctors at both hospitals “missed opportunities” to save the girl’s life.
“We feel so let down that Eva was lost in a system of two hospitals caring for her. We only found out about Eva’s neutropenia and how serious it is at the inquest nearly two years after her death, which hit us so hard,” Eva’s mom, Michelle, said.
“If we had known, we would have done everything possible to ensure our little girl received the right treatment.”
She added: “It’s really hard to believe a doctor did not sit us down to discuss this with us and how things could have been so different. We cannot believe how poor the hospitals’ attitude was with such a serious condition.
“They were so blasé and at no point did we feel Eva’s health was in danger from this condition. We just want lessons to be learned and for no other families to suffer as we have.”
Slamming the hospitals’ response to the girl’s condition was also JMW law firm medical solicitor Rachael Heyes who is representing the family in their legal battle.
“It is absolutely staggering that a young child with such a serious condition could receive such poor management and care,” she said.
“Eva was a bubbly little girl who loved life and she relied on the hospital staff to keep her safe and ensure that she received all the follow up she needed.
“She simply fell through the cracks but it’s completely unacceptable for that to have happened in a modern day health system that has guidelines and protocols in place to stop that from happening.”
Our thoughts are with Eva’s family during this challenging time.
