A young girl died in agony after her headscarf got caught in her go-kart during a race with her friends.
15-year-old Ruwaida Adan from London was go-kart racing with her friends when her hijab loosened and got trapped in her vehicle, causing the teenager to suffocate.
Four days after the girl was rushed to the hospital, she passed away from asphyxiation and hypoxic brain injury.
A probe has since been launched into the accident and Capital Karts in Barking.
As the inquest heard, the staff at Capital Karts should tell the teenager to remove her hijab before letting her ride a go-kart as per their policy that all loose clothing has to be removed.
It was further claimed that two parts designed to catch foreign items didn’t work properly in Ruwaida’s go-kart, allowing the headscarf to get caught in the moving parts of the vehicle.
Speaking to the court, the girl’s parents insisted that their daughter didn’t always wear her headscarf and that she would have complied and removed it if the staff told her to.
“No safety check ensured that Ruwaida removed her headscarf before getting into her go car,” the inquest heard.
“No daily mechanics check was carried out on August 6, 2021. In Ruwaida’s cart the plastic drive belt guard to the rear axle was absent and the rear seat shield was damaged.
“Both should cover exposed moving parts. Ruwaida’s scarf became entangled in the moving parts resulting in her asphyxiation and her death.”
Concluding the inquest, the girl’s family paid Ruwaida a touching tribute and branded her as a “kind, thoughtful, caring, loving, strong, and wise” person.
“Ruwaida was sweet and compassionate to everyone she met. She was so kind, thoughtful, caring, loving, strong and wise beyond her years,” they said.
“She was always speaking up for those who couldn’t speak up for themselves. She was always laughing and smiling – she had the most contagious laugh.
“Losing Ruwaida has been the hardest thing we have ever been through and losing her so unexpectedly makes it even worse. Not only has a big part of our family gone, but her death has caused us all so much pain that we are all changed forever. We miss Ruwaida every second of every day.”
