A 14-year-old girl tragically died after she used a deodorant in her bedroom, prompting her grieving parents to raise awareness of the dangers of solvents.
Giorgia Green from the UK was perfectly healthy when she went to bed but later that night, her older brother found her unresponsive.
According to reports, the teen had sprayed her blanket with deodorant to give it a pleasant smell before wrapping herself tightly inside it.
Giorgia reportedly died due to a cardiac arrest.
“Due to our own tragic circumstances we want to educate others and raise awareness to help protect you, your family, and friends,” her parents wrote on a Just Giving page.
“Giorgia Almira Green (our 14yr old daughter) went to her room on 11th May 2022. When mum went up to her as it was time for them to go out to Giorgia’s drumming lesson, Giorgia was non responsive.
“No illness, no sickness, no warning. A perfectly healthy fit child who has never been seriously ill.”
The heartbroken parents also said that their daughter was healthy and her tragic death came completely out of the blue.
They also said that Giorgia had autism and the smell of deodorant comforted her but she accidentally used too much aerosol spray.
Speaking to BBC, the teen’s dad, Paul, said: “The exact amount (of deodorant) isn’t clear but it would be more than you would normally spray. At some point, her heart stopped as a result of breathing it in.”
The fundraising page also read: “Please help us spread the word that toxic/poisonous chemicals and gases in aerosol cans CAN KILL.
“What we really want is to raise awareness about the dangers of aerosol products in the home. This hopefully could prevent further tragedies happening again.”
