A young girl was found dead after being swept off a waterfall during a family trip in North Carolina.
3-year-old Nevaeh Jade Newswanger from Pennsylvania was on a trip to North Carolina when her family decided to visit the top of Whitewater Falls near Cashiers.
As the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed, the little girl was swept away by a strong current before being pulled along and swept over a waterfall.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon, whereas the girl’s devastated family called the police and reported the accident just before 6 pm.
“Just prior to night fall on Sunday, rescuers located the child deceased and entrapped in an area of the waterfall,” the authorities confirmed.
Meanwhile, Jackson County Sheriff Chip Hall sent his condolences to the grieving family and took the opportunity to warn future visitors about the dangers of Whitewater Falls.
“First and foremost our prayers are with the Newswanger Family as they grieve the loss of this precious young child,” he said.
“With the onset of spring weather we need to be reminded of the dangers associated with many scenic areas of the region such as waterfalls.”
The sheriff added: “While beautiful to view from a safe distance, venturing out closer to the falls for any reason brings tremendous danger.
“Always remain at a safe distance, follow safety precautions and warnings which are in place, and view waterfalls from designated viewing areas.”
According to the reports, at least ten people have died at the popular tourist spot in the last few decades.
