Bob Newhart’s wife Ginnie Newhart has passed away at the age of 82 after a long battle with illness.
The tragic news was confirmed by the woman’s family on Sunday, just three months after she and her comedian husband celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
“We lost our beloved Ginnie Quinn Newhart – Wife, Mother and Grandmother on April 23rd, 2023 after a long battle with illness. She was our rock and we miss her terribly,” the family’s statement, which was shared on Newhart’s Twitter account, read.
On the following day, the saddening news was also confirmed by Jerry Digney, the family’s publicist, who told People that the family will hold a private funeral service.
Bob and Ginnie were married for six decades after meeting through a common friend, actor Buddy Hackett, and going on a blind date.
“Buddy said, ‘I’ve got a girl for you. She’s going with another guy, but I don’t think he’s right for her, so I’m going to fix you up on a blind date. You’ll meet her and you’ll date and you’ll get married. Then you’ll have kids and you’ll call one of the kids Buddy.’ Which we did,” the legendary comedian recalled back in 2019.
After their marriage, which came just a year after their blind date, Bob and Ginnie welcomed four children and went on to prosper for several decades until Ginnie’s disease ripped her away from her husband.
“The marriages of comedians, no matter how stormy, seem to last a long time, and I attribute it to laughter,” Bob told Parade in 2022 as he credited a good sense of humor to his long-lasting marriage.
“No matter how intense the argument you’re having, you can find a line, and then you both look at each other and start laughing. It’s over, you know? I think that sense of humor is very important to the longevity of a marriage.’”
Our thoughts remain with Ginnie’s loved ones during this challenging time.
