Ghislaine Maxwell has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after she apologized to her victims and told the court that meeting Jeffrey Epstein was the ‘biggest regret of my life’.
“Ms. Maxwell worked with Epstein to select young victims who were vulnerable and played a pivotal role in facilitating s*xual abuse,” said Judge Alison Nathan, who handed down the two-decade sentence followed by five years supervised release.
A fine of $750,000 was also imposed.
Maxwell, whose crimes were described as ‘heinous and predatory,’ had received a $10million bequest from Epstein.
She is likely to serve the entire 20-year sentence as there is no parole for federal prison.
Her legal team argued against the huge fine, claiming she ‘has received nothing’ from the bequest in Epstein’s will. But the judge noted that ‘there are additional assets.’
After the sentencing, Maxwell’s lawyer Bobbi Sternheim said: “Our client Ghislaine Maxwell has been vilified, pilloried and left little room for her to be treated fairly.
“Because even before she stropped forward into this courthouse, she was being tried and convicted in the court of public opinion.
“Ghislaine will appeal this case and we’re confident she will prevail on appeal.”
Before the sentencing, Maxwell told the court that Epstein ‘fooled’ her.
“I realize I have been convicted of assisting Jeffrey Epstein to commit these crimes,” she said.
“My association with Epstein will permanently stain me. It is the biggest regret of my life that I ever met him.”
She also said that Epstein ‘fooled all of those in his orbit.’
Prosecutors asked the judge to impose a sentence of at least 30 years due to Maxwell’s “utter lack of remorse,’ while she claimed that she should only serve four years behind bars.
The sentencing ended the decades-long fight for justice by Epstein and Maxwell’s victims.
