At least one person died while several suffered injuries after a parking garage in New York City collapsed.
The shocking incident took place at Enterprise Ann Parking at 57 Ann Street in lower Manhattan where a parking garage collapsed suddenly on Tuesday at 4.15 pm.
In horrific pictures from the scene, vehicles could be seen piled up in rubble where a section of the floor caved in and left the top floor “pancaked” on top of lower floors.
According to early reports, at least one person was killed in the tragedy. Several more sustained injuries of various nature.
As of this writing, the rescue operations remain ongoing and authorities fear that the death toll could rise at any moment.
“Injuries, deaths expected to change rapidly,” a member of the FDNY said.
Meanwhile, Mayor Eric Adams revealed that the officials dispatched a robot dog to search through the rubble because the building was extremely unstable.
“At this time this building is completely unstable and the chief – we do not want to send in someone until we can make sure the building is shored up,” he said.
On Twitter, the mayor added: “Sadly, we did lose one life. While we continue to search the site, at this time we are hopeful that there are no other people trapped in the structure.
“While we are grateful for the amazing work of our first responders, including the innovative technology they used as part of rescue efforts, the work won’t end tonight. An investigation into how this happened is underway. We will get answers.”
Our thoughts remain with the victims of the incident during this challenging time.
