Gabby Petito’s parents have been awarded $3 million in wrongful death lawsuit against Brian Laundrie’s estate.
Brian Laundrie was found dead last year after murdering his fiancée Gabby Petito, 22, during their cross-country trip in the States. After strangling his partner, Laundrie returned home to Florida and spent weeks with his parents before going on a run when he became a primary person of interest in the case.
The fugitive remained on the run for several days before taking his own life in the alligator-infested marsh near his parents’ home.
After the investigation came to an end, Gabby’s parents, Nichole Schmidt and Joseph Petito, launched a wrongful death lawsuit against Brian Laundrie’s estate.
In the suit, the parents accused Laundrie’s family of knowing that Brian had committed a murder and abetting his escape.
A settlement has since been reached and Gabby’s parents were awarded $3 million.
Since it is not believed the Laundrie family has the money, however, it is highly unlikely that Petito and Schmidt will see all of the funds they were awarded.
“No amount of money is sufficient to compensate the Petito family for the loss of their daughter, Gabby, at the hands of Brian Laundrie,” their attorney, Patrick Reilly, explained.
“Brian did not have $3 million; it’s an arbitrary number. Whatever monies they do receive will help Gabby’s family in their endeavors with the Gabby Petito Foundation.”
Meanwhile, Gabby’s family also sued Brian’s parents, Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, in a separate case that still remains active.
