Two best friends are dead as a result of a horrific ATV hit-and-run crash that took place at a Californian campground.
11-year-old Christina ‘Tina’ Bird and 12-year-old Jacob Martinez were the best of friends who looked forward to celebrating the Fourth of July weekend together at a camping site in Apple Valley, California.
On July 2, the pair were reportedly driving the same ATV when another all-terrain vehicle crashed into them and tipped them over.
According to the reports, the driver of the ATV that caused the accident fled the scene and left the two children alone.
While young Jacob was pronounced dead at the scene, little Tina was rushed to the hospital alive after suffering a severed spinal cord and multiple bone fractures.
Four days after the tragic incident, the 11-year-old was pulled off life support and pronounced dead.
“The doctors did their final tests today to see if there is any life in Tina. The results were negative,” Felica Nunez, Christina’s mother, announced.
“Tina has grown her pair of wings to join her Grandma and Grandpa in Heaven where she is pain free.”
Meanwhile, Jacob’s aunt, Daisy Montano, broke into tears as she recalled the horrific scene of the crash and the moment first responders tried their best to bring the boy back to life.
“We were told that the first person that tried to perform CPR to my nephew turned him around, but the only part that turned was his top half of his body because he was so broken, so we knew immediately that he was dead,” she said.
“And my brother was weeping on the ground to please help his son come back to life.”
As of this writing, the hit-and-run driver remains at large. The police believe the suspect was driving an orange 2021 RZR Turbo S or Turbo S4 ATV.
Meanwhile, the families of the two young victims slammed the driver for running away and leaving their kids to suffer in agony alone.
“My nephew was mangled. He was trampled to death. And that person just left. Why flee? You left two children to die,” Montano said in an interview with KTLA.
Our thoughts are with Christina and Jacob’s family during these challenging times.
